What if, rather than integrating disabled performers into the frameworks and conventions of a choreographic culture conceived by and for non-disabled artists, the logic were, for once, and as far as possible, reversed?
Where Is Everybody? was born out of an encounter during a workshop between ZOO, the company of choreographer Thomas Hauert, and dancers from Platform K, a Ghent-based Belgian organisation that trains disabled performers in contemporary dance. From this meeting emerged the idea of creating a work bringing together three performers from each company, centred precisely on the encounter between two artistic worlds and the emergence of a shared, unprecedented and non-hierarchical stage language. Drawing on the performers’ proposals, their musical choices, and the sharing of the distinctive choreographic tools based on improvisation that ZOO has developed over many years, Where Is Everybody? invites audiences to see the world through other perspectives and lived experiences.
With Where Is Everybody?, Thomas Hauert—recipient of the Swiss Grand Award for Performing Arts 2025—proposes another way of dancing, looking and positioning ourselves in relation to one another. From this accumulation of forms and situations emerges a new shared method in which unpredictability, creativity, immediacy and the vitality of the present moment can flourish.
