Tarsila do Amaral, Brazilian modernist, lecture by Céline Doutriaux
Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) is a central figure of Brazilian Modernism, drawing on the indigenist, popular and modern imagination of a changing country, Paris, 1920s. His iconography confronts cubism, primitivism. In Sao Paulo, she initiated the «anthropophagic» movement, the «devouring» of colonizing cultures. Brightly coloured landscapes, fascinating unusual visions, political canvases of the 1930s, dreamlike gigantism with almost abstract geometry: a powerful work. Price: 5€ for members of the association Friends of LaM - 8€ for non-members, sale of tickets on site the same day.
