Die Nachwelt hat den Namen von Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), einem weltweit bekannten und anerkannten Dramatiker und Autor des El Cid (1637) erhalten. Aber innerhalb der Corneille-Familie gibt es ein anderes Genie: Thomas! Er, nicht Peter, hat das erfolgreichste Theaterstück des 17. Jahrhunderts geschrieben: Timokrat (1656).
Wie sein Bruder absolvierte Thomas ein Jurastudium, bevor er eine sehr intensive Tätigkeit als Dramatiker aufnahm. Eine solche mimische Beziehung zwischen zwei Brüdern ist immer noch Quelle der Frage und des Geheimnisses, zumal Thomas die Schwester von Pierres Frau heiratete und sie nicht aufhörten zu leben - und zu schreiben - nebeneinander.
Warum ist Thomas Corneille, der zu seinen Lebzeiten äußerst beliebt war - und sogar noch mehr als sein älterer Bruder -, im Gegensatz zu seinem älteren Sohn, der einen unerschütterlichen Ruhm besaß, in Vergessenheit geraten?
Anlässlich seines 400. Geburtstags lädt die Ausstellung dazu ein, diesen "anderen" Corneille zu entdecken, der die Kunst des Stils, der Dramaturgie... aber auch die des Humors besaß!

Posterity has retained the name of Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), playwright known and recognized throughout the world and author of the Cid (1637). But within the Corneille family, there is another genius: Thomas! It is he, and not Pierre, who wrote the play that met with the greatest success in the 17th century: Timocrates (1656).
Like his brother, Thomas studies law before embracing a very dense activity as a playwright. Such a mimetic relationship between two brothers is still a source of questioning and mystery, especially since Thomas married the sister of Pierre’s wife and they never stopped living — and writing—next to each other.
Why did Thomas Corneille, extremely popular during his lifetime, even more than his big brother, sink into oblivion unlike his elder, with unwavering fame?
On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his birth, the exhibition invites you to discover this "other" Corneille, who possessed the art of style, dramaturgy... but also that of humor!

I posteri hanno conservato il nome di Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), drammaturgo conosciuto e riconosciuto in tutto il mondo e autore del Cid (1637). Ma nella famiglia Corneille c'è un altro genio: Thomas! È lui, e non Pietro, che ha firmato la commedia teatrale di maggior successo del XVII secolo: Timocrate (1656).
Come suo fratello, Thomas continuò gli studi di legge prima di intraprendere un'attività molto intensa come drammaturgo. Una tale relazione mimetica tra due fratelli è ancora fonte di interrogativi e di mistero, tanto più che Tommaso sposò la sorella della moglie di Pietro e non cessarono di vivere - e di scrivere - uno accanto all'altro.
Perché Thomas Corneille, estremamente popolare durante la sua vita, e forse più di suo fratello maggiore, è caduto nell'oblio a differenza del suo fratello maggiore, con una fama incrollabile?
In occasione dei 400 anni dalla sua nascita, la mostra invita a scoprire questo "altro" Corneille, che possedeva l'arte dello stile, della drammaturgia... ma anche quella dell'umorismo!

C'est lui, et non Pierre, qui a signé la pièce de théâtre qui a rencontré le plus grand succès au 17e siècle : Timocrate (1656).
Comme son frère, Thomas poursuit des études de droit avant d'embrasser une activité très dense de dramaturge. Une telle relation mimétique entre deux frères est encore source d'interrogation et de mystère d'autant plus que Thomas épousa la sœur de la femme de Pierre et ils ne cessèrent de vivre — et d'écrire — l'un à côté de l'autre.
Pourquoi Thomas Corneille, extrêmement populaire de son vivant, voire plus que son grand frère, a-t-il sombré dans l'oubli contrairement à son ainé, à la renommée inébranlable ?
