Île-de-France
The museum is installed since 1903 in a castle, major medieval building, built by Gauthier I de Vilebéon (1125 - 1205), grand chamberlain of the kings Louis VII and Philippe Auguste, in the second half of the 12th century as residence and stronghold of the lords of Nemours. Then the castle becomes ducal in the 15th century. Finally, the building is redesigned in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the current state of knowledge, the castle is considered to be the oldest town fortified castle in Ile-de-France.
