The museum offers a journey through the combined history of sugar and Bourbon Island, which highlights the cultural and economic particularities of this island in the Indian Ocean. In the 19th century, Réunion abandoned coffee culture to embark on that of the cane. It is above all a human adventure: the men and women who have allowed this agro-industry to exist, to develop, to innovate, are placed at the heart of the Museum, mirror of society and identity in Réunion. Historical data on settlement, slavery and indentureship, life stories, historical, ethnographic and technical collections, unusual objects, industrial remains, testimonies of former workers, archive documents give life and relief to this scenography of memory, with the reinforcement of the most recent multimedia tools. The Museum also consolidates its industrial vocation: description of the evolution of sugar techniques over nearly 200 years, and the manufacturing processes represented by the impressive machines in place
