What better guide for a visit to the gardens than the Chief Gardener of the estate?
During this visit, Jean-Marie Verfaillie will present you the history of the different gardens that make up the domain of La Motte-Tilly: French and English garden, vegetable garden, orchard, tilletum...
But, for this 2026 edition placed under the theme of "View", Jean-Marie Verfaillie will talk to you more particularly about the restoration works of the great perspective of Melz which overlooks the north facade of the castle and its mirror of water. A gradual project over 3 years, which aims to replant several hundred plane trees to redraw the initial perspective of the 18th century desired by the architect François-Nicolas Lancret.

The Parc de la Motte-Tilly is a testament to the evolution of the gardens of the grand mansions. At its creation in 1754, it was a regular garden, designed by the architect François Nicolas Lancret with large axes, embroidery, boulingrins and rigid alleys.
But the regular garden lasted only about thirty years, because fashion, at the end of the 18th century, evolves towards landscape romanticism with the appearance of «Anglo-Chinese» gardens: the lines bend, the flowerbeds curve, the groves diversify. Around 1787, the park was transformed according to the new taste of the time: vast lawns dotted with grove of trees with irregular edges, gentle slope towards the water body embellished by two artificial islands.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the trend is to return more ordered gardens. When the Count of Rohan Chabot took possession of the property in 1910, he decided to restore the estate to its original state. Using Lancret’s plan, he recreated a classically inspired garden set
