The Moulin d'Andé is an exceptional heritage site, whose architectural history dates back several centuries. Located on an arm of the Seine, it retains the structure of an old hydraulic mill whose first traces date back to the Middle Ages, before being deeply altered in the 17th and 18th centuries. The set consists of a mill on the water with a "hanging" wheel, a miller’s house, outbuildings, greenhouses, a landscaped park and remarkable rockeries, in a rare dialogue between architecture, landscape and memory of the river. This ensemble, classified and registered as a historical monument, still bears the traces of this stratification of time.
But the Moulin d'Andé is not only a heritage: it became, from the second half of the 20th century, a major place of creation.
It was in 1957 that Suzanne Lipinska discovered this place and decided to make it a welcoming space for artists. Little by little, she transforms the Moulin into a unique living and working place, where one comes to write, think, repeat, compose, film, often far from the tumult of Paris.
Very quickly, young filmmakers find refuge there: François Truffaut, Alain Cavalier, Louis Malle pass by, as do many actors, writers and musicians. Le Moulin thus discreetly accompanies the emergence of a part of modern French cinema.
Writers such as Georges Perec, René de Obaldia and Maurice Pons also found in it a rare setting, conducive to concentration and invention.
Over the decades, the Moulin became a real artistic hive: a place where disciplines, generations, forms of writing and sensibilities meet.
Today, this story continues through the CECI, concerts, festivals, artistic residencies, intellectual meetings and seminars, in a fragile balance between living heritage and contemporary creation.
