Founded during the reign of Charlemagne in the 800s by Barnard, a high-ranking military officer, the Abbey of Ambronay is attached to the Rule of Saint Benedict. In the 11th century, the Abbey enjoyed total sovereignty by papal privilege, thus dependent only on Rome. During the Revolution, the monks were expelled. With the provision of the clergy’s property to the nation and the destruction of the old Saint-Nicolas church, the parishioners choose the abbey as a place of worship. At the peak of the movement, it was transformed into a temple of reason before becoming again the church that we know now. Over time, the convent buildings are sold in lots and experience new assignments related to events: prison, barn, hospice, school, garrison building, social housing, etc. In 1980, the association Art et Musique creates the Ambronay Festival around the dissemination and production of early music concerts, particularly baroque.
