Le Castel was built after 1849 on the site of the former convent of Sainte-Claire, by Olivier Voutier, sailor and archaeologist, inventor of the Venus de Milo. Like many winter visitors who came to enjoy the mild climate, the American novelist Edith Wharton settled in the villa in 1920 and acquired it in 1927\. Great garden enthusiast, passionate about acclimatization, she restructures the garden, plants many perfume plants and introduces exotic essences, including strelizia reginae. Property of the city since 1960, it houses the headquarters of the national park of Port-Cros. Leaning against the castle hill, the garden offers remarkable views of the city, its site and the sea. Its terraces supported by stone walls of Bormes welcome many rare subtropical species from South America and Australia (brachychiton rupestris, araucaria, dracaena draco, lonicera, cycas, erythrine caffra...).
