6 Place d'Iéna, 75016 Paris, France
The building is an identical reproduction of the one that Émile Guimet had built by the neo-classical architect Jules Chatron in 1879 in Lyon. An imposing corner tower serves both as a vestibule and library, and provides access to the different rooms of the museum. The neo-Greek style of the building is in harmony with the vocation of the museum fully inscribed in the tradition of 19th century museum-temples, chosen by E. Guimet. On 23 November 1889, the museum’s inauguration coincided with the fourth Universal Exhibition. From 1996, the architects, Henri and Bruno Gaudin, and the conservation team, gave priority to daylight and the creation of open perspectives in the 5,500 m2 of permanent galleries.
