Sarre-Union is the name of the union of Bouquenom and Neu-Sarrewerden. Bouquenom, on the right bank of the Sarre, already occupied during the Gallo-Roman era, obtains its city status in 1328\. It is an ancient fortified city, with narrow and tortuous alleys, originally flanked by thirteen towers and two gates (some elements of the ramparts still stand out today). On the left bank, a new village was erected in 1706: Neusaarwerden, called La Ville Neuve. It was created by the counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken; its architecture and urban planning give it a remarkable and unique character in Alsace. The two localities were unified in 1794, giving birth to the name of Sarre-Union.
The exceptional religious pluralism of Sarre-Union has left many witnesses at the turn of its picturesque alleys. The church of Saint-Georges is thus one of the most remarkable buildings in the city.
