In the 19th and 20th centuries, in Bourg-le-Roi (Sarthe), fire protection was based on a local communal organization, typical of the small rural villages of the former province of Maine.
The 19th century: Communal organization and equipment
Creation of communal bodies: Following the national laws of 22 March 1831 on the reorganization of the National Guard and the communal fire brigades, the commune acquired a small local team of volunteers.
Rudimentary means: The equipment mainly consists of a municipal hand pump, canvas or leather buckets, and some pipes, stored in a room in the village.
Role of the inhabitants: In case of fire, the tocsin sounds. The able-bodied men of the village turn into "soldiers of fire" to form the chain of buckets and activate the hand pump by drawing water from wells or the nearby reach.
