House of the merchant Jean Calas, where his son Marc Antoine was found hanged on the evening of October 13, 1761\. Jean Calas, a Protestant, was tried and sentenced to death for having killed his son who wanted to convert to Catholicism. He was beaten alive and burned on 10 March 1762, when he claimed his innocence. Voltaire seized the case and published his "Treaty on Tolerance" in 1763\. On June 4, 1764, an edict of the King’s Council overturned the decisions of the Parliament of Toulouse. On 9 March 1765, three years after his execution, Jean Calas and his family were definitively rehabilitated by an assembly of eighty judges and by the King’s Council. A place of memory, Calas tends to become a symbol of tolerance and secularism.
