Having redeemed the lordship of Sedan from his brother-in-law Guillaume de Braquemont, Evrard III de la Marck began in 1424 to build a first castle including a priory. This triangular castle, called primitive castle, was very largely enlarged and reinforced by the descendants of Evrard. The gradual arrival of artillery will require it to adapt to this formidable weapon. After the failure of a conspiracy against Richelieu, Frédéric Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne, last prince of Sedan is imprisoned. To save his head, he donates the Principality to King Louis XIII, which means the attachment of the latter to France. From then on, and for 320 years, the French army occupied the castle. In 1962, the town council bought the castle and inaugurated its first tour in 1995 retracing the history of the site.
