When industry disappears: reading the traces of an industrial landscape
What remains of an industrial site when buildings, machinery and infrastructure have disappeared?
Through this conference, Pierre Fluck, academic specialist in industrial archaeology, proposes to explore the ways of reading and interpreting landscapes shaped by industry. Far from being limited to monumental remains, industrial archaeology is also interested in more discreet traces: landscape forms, preserved structures, networks, materials, arrangements or sometimes almost imperceptible clues.
Taking as a starting point the old wells of the Alsatian potash basin, now disappeared from many landscapes, this meeting invites us to look differently at a territory that is believed to be familiar. What else can we learn from these places about the activities that took place there, the techniques used and the men and women who made them happen?
Echoing the exhibition "Les puits disparus" by Thomas Ermel, the conference will thus question the memory of industrial sites and their future, when material traces disappear.
For a landscape not only preserves what is visible: it can also bear the signs of an industrial history that must be deciphered.

Mineralogical collection presenting 100 years of geological researches(searches) with 5000 samples of saline and potassium rocks of the whole world resulting of 100 years from researches(searches), polls(soundings) and drillings of the geological service(department) of the appearances(mines) of potash of Alsace.
