Église paroissiale Saint-Germain
1 Rue Saint-Germain, 77400 Gouvernes, France

Île-de-France
Coming against the north aisle of the church (13th century), the catechism room does not communicate with the neighboring bodies but nevertheless once served as a sacristy. Mural paintings are displayed on the north wall (Virgin and Child in a mandorla surrounded by angels and saints or figures in procession) and on the east wall (Throne of grace). The southern wall was occupied by a vast canvas depicting the Last Supper, now disappeared. These paintings are due to Canon Etienne-Léon Jouy, a great scholar from Seine-et-Marne at the end of the 19th century and a self-taught artist. These paintings illustrate a catechesis in contact with the concerns that could nourish a chaplain immersed in his responsibilities, coupled with an artist claiming the Gothic tradition in his desire to educate, edify and interest.
