Brendan, ein zwölfjähriger Mönch-Lehrling, wird von seinem Onkel, dem strengen Abt Cellach, in der Kells Abbey erzogen. Abt Cellah ist ein ehemaliger Illuminator, der seine kreative Tätigkeit aufgab und sich dem Bau einer riesigen Mauer widmete, um die Abtei vor den Invasionen der Wikinger zu schützen. Bruder Aidan, der berühmteste Illuminator, kommt nach Kells, nachdem seine Stadt zerstört wurde. Bei diesem erleuchteten Beleuchter, dem Hüter eines großen Buches, das in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten von anderen begonnen wurde, findet Brendan einen geistlichen Vater und die Kraft, den Verboten seines Onkels zu trotzen. Um dem alten Künstler die Tinte zu besorgen, die er zum Abschluss des Werks braucht, geht der Junge heimlich durch das Tor der Abtei und begibt sich zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben allein in den dichten Wald vor ihm.

Brendan, a 12-year-old apprentice monk, is raised by his uncle, the stern Abbot Cellach, in the abbey of Kells. Abbot Cellah is a former illuminator who abandoned all creative activity to devote himself to the construction of a giant wall, in order to protect the abbey against Viking invasions. Brother Aidan, the most famous of the illuminators, comes to find refuge in Kells, after his city has been destroyed. With this enlightened illuminator, the keeper of a great book begun by others over the past decades, Brendan finds a spiritual father and the strength to defy the prohibitions imposed by his uncle. To provide the old artist with the ink he needs to complete the work, the boy clandestinely crosses the door of the abbey and enters alone, for the first time in his life, the thick forest that faces him.

Brendan, un monaco apprendista di 12 anni, viene cresciuto da suo zio, il severo abate Cellach, nell'abbazia di Kells. L'abate Cellah è un antico illuminista che ha abbandonato ogni attività creativa per dedicarsi alla costruzione di un muro gigante, al fine di proteggere l'abbazia dalle invasioni vichinghe. Il fratello Aidan, il più famoso illuminista, trova rifugio a Kells dopo che la sua città è stata distrutta. Accanto a questo illuminista, custode di un grande libro iniziato da altri negli ultimi decenni, Brendan trova un padre spirituale e la forza per sfidare i divieti imposti da suo zio. Per procurare al vecchio artista l'inchiostro di cui ha bisogno per completare l'opera, il ragazzo varca clandestinamente la porta dell'abbazia e si addentra da solo, per la prima volta nella sua vita, nella fitta foresta che lo fronteggia.

Brendan, un apprenti moine de 12 ans, est élevé par son oncle, le sévère Abbé Cellach, au sein de l’abbaye de Kells. L’abbé Cellah est un ancien enlumineur qui a abandonné toute activité créative pour se consacrer à la construction d’un mur géant, afin de protéger l’abbaye contre les invasions Vikings. Le frère Aidan, le plus fameux des enlumineurs, vient trouver refuge à Kells, après que sa ville a été détruite. Auprès de cet enlumineur éclairé, gardien d’un grand livre commencé par d’autres au cours des décennies passées, Brendan trouve un père spirituel et la force de braver les interdits posés par son oncle. Pour procurer au vieil artiste l’encre dont il a besoin pour achever l’ouvrage, le garçon franchit clandestinement la porte de l’abbaye et s’engage seul, pour la première fois de sa vie, dans l’épaisse forêt qui lui fait face.

Brendan, un aprendiz monacal de 12 años, fue criado por su tío, el severo abad Cellach, en la abadía de Kells. El abad Cellah es un antiguo iluminador que abandonó toda actividad creativa para dedicarse a la construcción de un muro gigante, con el fin de proteger la abadía contra las invasiones vikingas. El hermano Aidan, el más famoso de los iluminadores, se refugia en Kells, después de que su ciudad ha sido destruida.
