Espace Kugler Gallery presents an exhibition by Colombian artist Rubén Barrios-Rodríguez, co-produced by Association Cube Noir, Camilo Agudelo and Jorge Cadena.
Recommended age: 16+
Born in 1995 in Barranquilla, Colombia, where he lives and works, Rubén Barrios-Rodríguez develops a visual and interdisciplinary practice encompassing drawing, photography, photo-performance, video, performance, installation and objects. His work explores the cultural construction of masculinity and the social norms that shape behaviours, appearances and desires associated with the male body.
In Désirs brutes, the male body becomes a territory where desire, eroticism, constraint, vulnerability and resistance intersect. Through homoerotic representations, nude bodies, masks, harnesses and references to the world of football, the artist challenges patriarchal and heteronormative models, as well as the expectations surrounding what a man is supposed to reveal, conceal, desire or become.
Football plays a particularly significant role in his artistic research. Its objects and codes are reappropriated and transformed, creating a tension between traditional representations of virility and notions of fragility, desire, pain and resistance.
At Espace Kugler Gallery, the exhibition takes the form of a focused and deliberately pared-down presentation of Rubén Barrios-Rodríguez's work. The artist will be in Geneva and present at the opening reception, offering visitors an opportunity to discover his work and meet him in person.
