Die lange am Rande der Kunstgeschichte liegende Fotografie hat unser Verhältnis zu uns selbst grundlegend verändert. Familienalben, Schnappschüsse und volkstümliche Bilder zeichnen nicht nur die Realität auf: Sie inszenieren sie, schreiben sie neu und verleihen ihr eine Form. Durch diese Ästhetik des Alltäglichen hört die Authentizität auf, als eine tiefe, natürliche und verborgene Wahrheit der Gesellschaft zu erscheinen; Sie wird zu einer Praxis, einem Spiel von Masken und Erzählungen, einer ständig wiedergespielten Erfindung. Die fotografische Revolution bestand also vielleicht nicht darin, die Welt zu enthüllen, wie sie ist, sondern aus dem Dasein selbst ein Werk der Komposition zu machen.

Long relegated to the margins of art history, photography of the ordinary has nevertheless profoundly transformed our relationship with ourselves. Family albums, snapshots and vernacular images do not merely record reality: they stage it, rewrite it and give it form. Through this aesthetic of the everyday, authenticity ceases to appear as a deep, natural and concealed truth of society; it becomes a practice, a game of masks and stories, an invention perpetually replayed. So the photographic revolution may not have been about revealing the world as it is, but about making life itself a work of composition.

Per lungo tempo relegata ai margini della storia dell'arte, la fotografia del quotidiano ha tuttavia profondamente trasformato il nostro rapporto con noi stessi. Album di famiglia, istantanee e immagini vernacolari non si limitano a registrare il reale: lo mettono in scena, lo riscrivono e gli conferiscono una forma. Attraverso questa estetica del quotidiano, l'autenticità smette di apparire come una verità profonda, naturale e nascosta della società; diventa una pratica, un gioco di maschere e racconti, un'invenzione perpetuamente rigiocata. Quindi la rivoluzione fotografica potrebbe non essere stata quella di rivelare il mondo così com'è, ma di trasformare l'esistenza stessa in un'opera di composizione.

Albums de famille, instantanés et images vernaculaires ne se contentent pas d’enregistrer le réel : ils le mettent en scène, le réécrivent et lui confèrent une forme. À travers cette esthétique du quotidien, l’authenticité cesse d’apparaître comme une vérité profonde, naturelle et dissimulée de la société ; elle devient une pratique, un jeu de masques et de récits, une invention perpétuellement rejouée. Ainsi la révolution photographique n’a-t-elle peut-être pas consisté à révéler le monde tel qu’il est, mais à faire de l’existence elle-même une œuvre de composition.

Durante mucho tiempo relegada a los márgenes de la historia del arte, la fotografía de lo ordinario ha transformado profundamente nuestra relación con nosotros mismos. Álbumes de familia, instantáneas e imágenes vernáculas no se limitan a grabar lo real: lo ponen en escena, lo reescriben y le dan una forma. A través de esta estética del cotidiano, la autenticidad deja de aparecer como una verdad profunda, natural y oculta de la sociedad; se convierte en una práctica, un juego de máscaras y narraciones, una invención perpetuamente repetida. Así, la revolución fotográfica puede no haber consistido en revelar el mundo tal como es, sino en hacer de la existencia misma una obra de composición.
