From the very beginning of photography, it has aroused great interest in scientific circles. Many studies have been devoted to the early attempts made by some scholars to integrate this medium into their research efforts. The possibilities offered by photography were then explored in a wide variety of fields (astronomy, medicine, archaeology, physics, natural sciences, ethnology, anthropology, architecture etc.) and for a plurality of uses (experimental devices, documentary or conservation tools, communication, teaching or research valorisation instruments). Thus, from the 1830s to the 1960s, photography played an increasing role in the making of modern sciences, offering new resources and tools that will be widely used in natural sciences, both physical and social. The symposium aims to provide an overview of new perspectives on the interactions between photography and science by exploring the cultural, social, economic and even institutional issues related to it. It is thus a question of highlighting the appropriations, the transformations but also the tensions which accompanied the scientific uses of photography and to evaluate the role of the new photographic medium in the scientific transformations from the 19th century. Attentive to the new insights offered by the cultural and social history of science and technology, as well as visual approaches, the conference will place particular emphasis on the diversity of sources studied, focusing on unpublished corpora composed of visual documents, institutional archives and material objects, etc. Specific attention will be given to "young research", highlighting emerging works. Multidisciplinarity will be encouraged, by mobilizing specialists in the history of science, photography, art history, sociology and technical studies, etc. If France is the privileged geographical area, the conference also opens to other contexts and places of production of photographs for scientific purposes. In addition, a closing panel will address the current links between science and new technologies of photographic production and visualization.
