Bas Smets is a globally recognized landscape architect whose practice redefines what is possible in the face of climate change.
Climates of Landscape is his first exhibition at LUMA Arles that brings together landscape architecture, design and ecological thinking to demonstrate how urban ecologies can be conceived and constructed. The exhibition explores the way to rethink ecosystems and our relationship to the environment. For Smets, a city can be understood as an aggregation of artificial climates. Buildings alter wind patterns and modulate sunlight exposure, while streetscapes modify runoff water and affect soil permeability. Landscape architecture can create microclimates with intention, treating the city as a living laboratory. Informed by the detailed study of how plants and other organisms transform their environments over time, landscape design introduces vegetation into an urban fabric as the agent of change and transformation. Through carefully constructed landscapes, new climates can emerge, making the built environment more resilient in the face of the steadily growing crisis of general climatic conditions.
The exhibition begins with a selection of three major projects that show the ways in which landscape architecture can respond to different challenges of the climate crises. From the enhancement of outdoor comfort and reduction of the perceived temperature around Notre-Dame in Paris, to the creation of an embankment park that mitigates with the rise of water levels in Antwerp, to the transformation of the Parc des Ateliers for LUMA Arles into a self-sustaining ecology, the work of Bas Smets reflects a commitment to solution-based design grounded in scientific research. Just as natural ecosystems alter the land on which they develop, urban ecologies have the capacity to reshape the environment in powerful ways. At the thin interface between an uncertain climate above and a malleable geology below, urban ecologies are critical zones of life. Maintained and reproduced carefully, these ecologies can be resources for a sustainable future.
The Parc des Ateliers, part of LUMA Arles, plays a significant role in the exhibition. The transformation of this former industrial wasteland into a self-sustaining ecosystem–the largest climatic project of Bas Smets to date-is not only a great engineering project but an opportunity to better inhabit a city, redefining the relationship between nature, architecture and urbanism. With an emphasis on ecological resilience, climate adaptation and the emotional impact of space, Smets integrates topography, water, vegetation and human experience to create a park that becomes synonymous with the future and how we live with and within nature. Through microclimate design, Smets’ approach is rooted in understanding the specific environmental conditions of the site in Arles-sun exposure, wind patterns, humidity and temperature variations-and using this information to introduce specific types of vegetation that produce a microclimate naturally. The plants become the protagonists of the park, which in turn becomes a tool for environmental performance and positive transformation, making it both technically innovative and deeply attuned to human and ecological needs.
Climates of Landscape draws upon two decades of innovative projects and provides an immersion into never-before-seen material on the conceptualization and production of landscape architecture today, at a moment when its importance is more pertinent than ever.

Bas Smets est un architecte paysagiste de renommée internationale dont la pratique repense les possibles à l’heure du changement climatique.
Les Climats du Paysage, sa première exposition à LUMA Arles, réunit architecture paysagère, design et pensée écologique pour démontrer comment les écologies urbaines peuvent être imaginées et construites. L’exposition interroge la manière de repenser les écosystèmes et notre relation à l’environnement. Pour Smets, la ville peut être envisagée comme un assemblage de climats artificiels : les bâtiments modifient la trajectoire des vents et l’exposition à la lumière du soleil, tandis que les paysages urbains influencent l’écoulement des eaux et la perméabilité des sols. L’architecture paysagère devient alors un outil pour créer des microclimats intentionnels, transformant la ville en véritable laboratoire vivant. Fondée sur l’étude détaillée des processus par lesquels les plantes et les organismes transforment leur milieu au fil du temps, elle insère la végétation dans le tissu urbain comme vecteur de transformation. Ces paysages soigneusement élaborés permettent l’émergence de nouveaux climats et renforcent la résilience de l’environnement bâti face à la crise climatique croissante.
L’exposition s’ouvre sur une sélection de trois projets emblématiques illustrant la manière dont l’architecture paysagère peut répondre aux multiples défis posés par les crises climatiques. De l’amélioration du confort extérieur et de la réduction de la température perçue autour de Notre-Dame à Paris, à la création d’un parc aménagé sur les berges agissant comme tampon face à la montée des eaux à Anvers, en passant par la transformation du Parc des Ateliers pour LUMA Arles en une écologie autonome, le travail de Bas Smets témoigne d’une conception ancrée dans la recherche scientifique, orientée vers des solutions concrètes. Tout comme les écosystèmes naturels transforment les territoires qu’ils colonisent, les écologies urbaines ont le pouvoir de reconfigurer en profondeur l’environnement. Situées à l’intersection fragile entre un climat instable en haut et une géologie malléable en bas, elles constituent des zones de vie essentielles. Soigneusement cultivées et démultipliées, ces écologies deviennent des ressources propices à la création d’un avenir durable.
Le Parc des Ateliers, partie intégrante de LUMA Arles, occupe une place importante dans l’exposition. La transformation de cette ancienne friche industrielle en un écosystème autonome – le plus vaste projet climatique de Bas Smets à ce jour – constitue à la fois une prouesse d’ingénierie et une proposition pour mieux habiter la ville, en redéfinissant les relations entre nature, architecture et urbanisme. Porté par une attention particulière à la résilience écologique, à l’adaptation climatique et à l’impact émotionnel des espaces, Smets articule topographie, gestion de l’eau, végétation et expérience humaine pour concevoir un parc tourné vers l’avenir, un lieu pour vivre autrement notre coexistence avec la nature. Grâce à la création de microclimats, son approche repose sur une compréhension intelligente des conditions environnementales propres au site d’Arles – exposition solaire, circulation des vents, variations d’humidité et de température – pour y implanter des espèces végétales spécifiques qui œuvrent naturellement à la génération d’un microclimat local. Les plantes deviennent ainsi les véritables protagonistes du parc, qui à son tour évolue comme un outil de performance environnementale et de transformation positive. Il conjugue inventivité technique et pertinence écologique, en adéquation fondamentale avec les besoins humains.
Les Climats du Paysage s’appuie sur deux décennies de projets novateurs et propose une immersion dans des documents inédits, dévoilant les processus de conception et de réalisation d’une architecture de paysage devenue plus essentielle et plus urgente que jamais.
