"Afropolitan Comics" is the result of a partnership between the Institut français d'Afrique du Sud and the Cité de la bande dessinée et de l'image. This virtual exhibition consists of a dialogue between the South African comics and the comics of other countries of the African continent, through the works of 16 artists, gathered under three major themes: "Autobiography", "Heroes and History" and "Folklore and the Future". It is carried by curators Tara Weber (curator of the Johannesburg Art Gallery) and Raymond Whitcher (comic book author and researcher), as well as Jean-Philippe Martin (scientific advisor of the CIBDI) and Joëlle Epée Mandengue (comic book author and director of the Bilili BD Festival in Congo-Brazzaville), and developed by the French creative studio Cher Ami. This innovative cultural experience will be offered free of charge online from 25 June 2020, at afropolitancomics.com, and will allow users to navigate between works, the analyses of the exhibition curators and exclusive interviews with the authors of the exhibited comic strip.
