Ethologie und Kognition der Primaten
Wozu dient es, das Verhalten von Primaten zu studieren? Menschenaffen sind unsere engsten Verwandten und liefern die klarsten Informationen über die Entwicklung unserer Spezies. Die vergleichende Forschung zwischen dem Menschen und anderen Primaten hilft daher zu verstehen, wie sich spezifische menschliche Eigenschaften wie Sprache oder Kultur entwickelt haben. Der Referent wird diesen grundlegenden Punkt anhand einiger Studien veranschaulichen, die sowohl in ihren afrikanischen Feldstationen als auch in ihrem Kognitionslabor im Basler Zoo durchgeführt wurden.

Ethology and cognition of primates
What is the purpose of studying the behavior of primates? The great apes are our closest cousins and provide the clearest information on the evolution of our species. Comparative research between humans and other primates allows us to understand how specific human traits, such as language and culture, came about. The speaker will illustrate this fundamental point with some studies conducted both in their African field stations and in their cognition laboratory at Basel Zoo.

Ethologie et cognition des primates
A quoi sert d'étudier le comportement des primates ? Les grands singes sont nos cousins les plus proches et fournissent les informations les plus claires sur l'évolution de notre espèce. La recherche comparative entre l'homme et d'autres primates permet donc de comprendre comment sont apparus des traits spécifiques à l'homme, comme le langage ou la culture. Le conférencier illustrera ce point fondamental par quelques études menées à la fois dans leurs stations de terrain africaines et dans leur laboratoire de cognition au zoo de Bâle.
