Educating Amerindians in French Guyana: meeting with Hélène Ferrarini and Alexis Tiouka
On the occasion of the release of her latest book, "Allons enfants de la Guyane : éduquer, évangéliser, coloniser les Amérindiens dans la République", published by Anacharsis in the collection "Les ethnographiques", Hélène Ferrarini talks with Alexis Tiouka.
In French Guiana, for decades - and still today in Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock - children from different indigenous communities grew up in 'Indian homes', boarding schools run by Catholic congregations. The policy of forced assimilation carried out by the French state with the support of the clergy attests to the colonial persistence in this young overseas department. In an in-depth investigation combining archives and testimonies, Hélène Ferrarini lifts the veil on a hitherto ignored history in which the words of the former boarders finally find a place.
Speakers Hélène Ferrarinii, independent journalist; Alexis Tiouka, lawyer and activist for the indigenous cause in Guyana
