Rébétiko and other traditional music from Greece

A true celebration of the art of rebetiko, this concert emotionally traces the paths of this popular urban Greek music that today enjoys a vast reputation around the world.
Born in the early 20th century, rebetiko has its roots in a mixture of personal and collective histories, often tumultuous: on the one hand, people from the countryside leaving their villages to join the hustle and bustle of big cities like Athens; on the other, refugee populations from Asia Minor returning “home”, bringing with them their pain and nostalgia. From this encounter has sprung a unique music, deeply rooted in local traditions, which inevitably resonates with some of today's migratory movements.
On stage, Ourania Lampropoulou, virtuoso of the Greek santuri zither, Evgenios Voulgaris on oud and Avgerini Gatsi on vocals perform emblematic rebetiko pieces, inspired by original recordings from 1922 to 1940. With passion and talent, sharing their sensibilities and life paths, these artists reveal the richness of this tradition and its links with the music of the various Greek regions. An original way to explore an essential aspect of the history and soul of the Greek world, a moment out of time, where each note weaves a living link between past and present.
