About the location

Château de Losse
Route de la Princesse d'Annam, 24290 Thonac
  • Dordogne
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Despite its apparent homogeneity that seems to be confirmed by the vintage engraved 1570 in several places, the castle of Losse is a real architectural palimpsest: it includes vestiges of the late Middle Ages on which were erected new and ambitious constructions during the sixteenth century, in several phases.
Most of the work was done by a single man: Jean de Losse, «the honour and glory of Périgord» (according to the Périgourdin canon Jean Tarde), who was a knight of the king’s orders, governor of Mariembourg, Lyon, Verdun and Guyenne, field marshal and captain of the Louvre. The large castle, with its magnificent gardening developments, bears witness to this dazzling and unusual career.
