In autumn 1929, the Gazette de Lausanne reported on a concert in honor of the delegates of the League of Nations under the title "La musique à travers l'espace." The remarkable aspect of this concert was the fact that the musicians played in Berlin, London, Vienna, Paris, Milan, and Zurich and were brought together virtually in the ether. However, this attempt to overcome boundaries with the help of music is only one example of the role of music in the environment of the League of Nations. Expert commissions of the League of Nations also devoted themselves to musical questions and discussed the possible uses of music records or the determination of the tuning tone. Other organizations in the field of music also sought the proximity of the League of Nations.
Using the example of the League of Nations and international organizations, the lecture shows the potential of research at the interface of diplomacy, history, and musicology. In this context, aspects of national and international negotiation processes, as well as questions of politicization and standardization are of particular importance.

Speaker Dr. Christiane Sibille, historian at the University of Arts Zurich.
