Tafeln, die die verschiedenen Etappen des Lebens von Auguste CHAPDELAINE illustrieren, der 1814 in La Rochelle Normande geboren wurde und Missionspriester wurde. Er war einer der vielen Akteure der großen missionarischen Bewegung, die das 19. Jahrhundert beseelte und tief im Land verwurzelt war und wo es darum ging, die christliche Zivilisation überall dort zu pflanzen, wo es möglich war. Deshalb wählte er China, wo das Christentum eine starke Ablehnung hervorrief. Am 28. Februar 1856 starb er in der Provinz Kouang-si als Märtyrer. Seine Hinrichtung war der Vorwand für einen bedeutenden Fortschritt des Kolonialismus in China. Seine Heiligsprechung im Jahr 1900 war erneut der Grund für einen Konflikt zwischen den chinesischen Behörden und dem Vatikan.

Fu uno dei tanti protagonisti del grande movimento missionario che animò il XIX secolo, profondamente radicato nelle campagne e dove si trattava di andare a piantare la civiltà cristiana ovunque fosse possibile. Per questo sceglie la Cina dove il cristianesimo suscitava un rifiuto molto forte. Soprannominato padre Ma, morì martire il 28 febbraio 1856 nella provincia di Kouang-si. La sua esecuzione fu il pretesto per un progresso considerevole del colonialismo in Cina. Beatificata nel 1900, la sua canonizzazione nel 2000 fu nuovamente motivo di conflitto tra le autorità cinesi in Vaticano.

C'est pourquoi, il choisit la Chine où le christianisme suscitait un rejet très fort. Surnommé le Père Ma, il mourut martyr, le 28 février 1856, dans la province de Kouang-si. Son exécution fut le prétexte d'une avancée considérable du colonialisme en Chine.
