The Franco-British Memorial in Thiepval is one of the largest memorials in the world. Inaugurated in 1932, it lists the names of more than 72,000 soldiers lost in the fighting. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Memorial recalls that the Battle of the Somme, from July 1 to November 18, 1916, was the bloodiest of the Great War with 1,200,000 casualties. Hundreds of thousands of visitors (a large majority of whom are British) visit this site every year on pilgrimage.
